This study investigates gender and sexual identities among upwardly mobile young adults born in the 1980s in Istanbul, Turkey. It draws on interviews conducted between 2002 and 2006 with 87 Turkish college students between the ages of 18 and 23, as well as a survey, participant observation, and focus group research, to understand how they formed identities in relation to family relations, noting the tension between their desire to renounce the traditional models of selfless femininity and protective masculinity for sexual modernity and to reject power and authority outside of the individual, and the need to remain loyal and connected to social relations and connections. It considers the facades these youth use to construct new selves, focusing on heterosexually identified women challenging dominant norms of virginity and sexuality, heterosexually identified men who desire romance over sex, pious women contesting the boundary between private religion and public secularism through secular Muslim appearance, and gay-identified men adopting a Western gay identity. Incorporated between chapters are four vignettes, including one of a young lesbian feminist. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR ()
