Background To Issue: The first recorded instance of skiing in Australia took place in 1861 near Kiandra in the Nation's alpine region. Gold was being sought in this area, but the search was hampered by heavy snow falls. Amongst the diggers, a group of Norwegians strapped fence palings to their boots and began skiing across the Kiandra slopes.
