This is an antique Mettlach 1/2L German Beer Stein #2097 by Villeroy and Boch entitled "In praise of song."
The stein is attributed to Otto Hupp, who was the designer of the famed St. Florian Mettlach stein as well as the Mettlach Book series steins. It is designed with musical notes and words among fleur di lis and red urn form central motif emanating a golden flame.
The phrase on the stein translates to "Where there is singing, remain there. Evil people have no songs." The inlay lid depicts an acanthus leaf wreath and blue ribbons surrounding a central image of what appears to be a bladder-shaped pouch, possibly for music. The thumb lift depicts a lyre surrounding by scrolling foliage, all laid over a diagonal musical score.This stein has a value in the 2005 edition of The Mettlach Book by Gary Kirsner of $400-$550.
