Konark is one of the most ancient places in Orissa, where stone carving is the ancient practice of sculpting stone into art and utilitarian objects. Stone carving is one of the major handicrafts of Orissa. Usually, traditional and mythological figures are carved on stones.

Konark Sun Temple, one of India’s Cultural and Architectural Wonders, is an example of such astonishing artwork situated in Puri district in the state of Orrisa, India.

Period of Origin: The art dates back to the late 6th Century or early 7th Century AD.

Material: Konark Stone Carving utilizes serpentine stone, which is found in a staggering variety of colors. Compared to other dark rocks, serpentine is soft.

The basic design is traced on the stone and it is given a crude shape. Intricate work is then made. The final carving is then carried out and the items are polished. The process is carried by the reduction of a block of stone to a finished state using a variety of tools.
