Description

"The present work is designed as a contemporary history of the great conflict of nations forced upon Europe and the world by the aggressive action of the German Government and the "senseless ambition" of its Nazi dictator, the issue and extent of which, at the writing of this introductory note, cannot be foreseen with certitude."
- Sir John Hammerton, Issue No. 1

A truly remarkable historical resource of enormous value to anybody with an interest in the Second World War and the course of the 20th Century, The Second Great War was a news magazine published by Waverley Books in association with Amalgamated Press Ltd. in London over almost the entire duration of the conflict, at first fortnightly, later monthly and then fortnightly again when it became apparent that the war was drawing to a close, providing us with a unique record of events as they happened that totals approximately 4076 pages.

Issue No. 1 appeared on news stands in October 1939 just weeks after Britain declared war on Nazi Germany; a time when, as Hammerton says in the first paragraph, nobody knew what sort of war it was going to be, nor that it would go on for six years and lead to the deaths of as many as sixty million human beings, nor the sheer evil of the Nazis. It's fascinating to see how, as the war progresses, the magazine changes from early jingoistic patriotism to a realisation that the world was going through the darkest chapter in its entire history and would never be the same then, and then glimmers of hope when the tide began to turn.

This is a complete collection, from No. 1 through to No. 104, and includes the map of Europe published with the first issue - a Europe that looked very different to the one that would emerge from war six years later, and is still recovering to this day. The original owner, a Mrs Guy, had a subscription with the local newsagent so that each copy was saved for her; all copies therefore have her name and street number penciled on either the front or back cover but this has been done discreetly in each case so as not to affect text or pictures. Some issues, as is to be expected with magazines of this age, have rusty staples, though in most cases this is less advanced than is typical; Issue No. 1 appears to be the worst affected and the central section has become loose, though so far as we can see nothing is missing from any issue. There is a little foxing here and there but, again, this is far less prevalent than one might expect; most pages remain free of it and all are as readable now as they were when printed.

About Arthur Rank Hospice Charity

Arthur Rank Hospice Charity supports people in Cambridgeshire living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
