Description

When 20-year-old Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther established his pottery at Hohenberg an der Eger in 1814, he founded not only a business but an industry - Hutschenreuther nwas the first of many porcelain manufacturers in that corner of Bavaria, and the town is now famous for it.

The company is still in business today and has won numerous accolades for its ethical business practices. including being one of the first porcelain factories to attain TÜV-SÜD certification for environmentally-conscious energy management, and its products are known for their excellent quality, making them eagerly collected the world over.

In this collection of five Cameo collectors' fine porcelain plates, Hutschenreuther pays homage to some of the leading figures in Bavarian history.

The first three plates are plain white with a 24 carat gold rim. The figures depicted in relief on them are:

  • Maria Anna Sophia of Saxony, who lived between 1728-1797; daughter of King Augustus III of Poland, became  Electress of Bavaria after marrying Elector Maximilian III Joseph. Maria was a highly effective stateswoman who, despite her noble background, enjoyed great popularity among the common folk of Bavaria. The inscription on the plate reads: "D.G. Maria Anna Electr - BAV - NATA REG - PR - POL - Et Sax - F.A. Shega."
  • Her husband, Maximilian III Joseph (1727-1777) known as Maximilian the Much-Beloved, Prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire & Duke of Bavaria from 1745 to death; who, as his epithet suggests, was as popular among the people as his wife. His inscription reads: "D.G - MAXIMILLANUS - IOSEPHUS - ELECTOR - BAVARIAE"
  • Charles VII (1697-1745), father of Maximilian III; Prince-Elector of Bavaria from 1726 and Holy Roman Emperor from 1742 to death as well as, from 1741 to 1743, King of Bohemia. Though not an especially good ruler, Charles was responsible for much of the beautiful rococo architecture of Bavaria and as such is fondly remembered. His inscription is: "CAROLIS VII - D.G - ROM - IMP - SEMP - AUG"

The final two are white with silver edges and have pewter bas-reliefs in the centre. The figures and insciptions are:

  • Maximilian I, Duke of Bavaria, lived 1573-1651; Wittelsbach ruler of Bavaria and Prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire, Maximilian was a leading figure of the Counter-Reformation, making him popular in staunchly Catholic Bavaria where he was known as Maximilian the Great. The decoration on this plate is a reproduction of a 1 ducat coin minted during his reign. The inscription is: "MAXIMIL:COM:PAL:RH:VT:BA:DVX:S:R:I:ARCHIDAP:ET:ELECT"
  • William, Duke of Bavaria (1548-1626) and wife Renée (1544-1602); the decoration is a reproduction of a 1585 medal struck in 1585 and also designed by Gerhard to commemorate foundation of Jesuit church of St Michael in Munich. Gerhard also made a gilt bronze altarpiece for the Fugger family, whose banking business dynasty was founded by Jakob Fugger - the wealthiest man in recorded history. The inscription is: "BENEFAC DOMINE BONIS ET RECTIS CORDE:PSALM:CXXIV COR VN ANI VM ET MA VNA"

The back of each plate features the Hutschenreuther emblem depicting a lion in an oval with the year of the factory's foundation and the company name. Below this is the emblem and name of Münchener Rück Munich Re, indicating a connection to the Munich Re charitable foundation created by the Münchener Rück insurance company.

Designed as decorative pieces rather than utilitarian items, each plate has a small hole molded into the foot so that they can be easily hung for display. All five are in excellent condition with glossy white porcelain free of chips, cracks or crazing, and the gold, silver and pewter is lustrous and unworn. The original packaging has been lost, but our shipping department will wrap them in plenty of protective material to ensure they reach you in the same condition.

Its ‘Outstanding’ services are provided free of charge to patients and their families. The aim is to provide the highest quality care, helping them to make every moment count.

Around 4,000 patients are cared for each year at the Hospice in Cambridge, the Alan Hudson Day Treatment Centre in Wisbech and in patients’ own homes via the Arthur Rank Community Team. This care supports people to improve their quality of life and fulfil their end of their life choices.

Alongside the care provided by the Inpatient Unit, Living Well services and Hospice at Home teams, patients can access: patient and family support; lymphoedema care; complementary therapy; medical and pain outpatient clinics; and advice from the clinical nurse specialists within the Specialist Palliative Care Home Team. Programmes are practical, holistic and tailored to the individual patient, family member or carer and may also include rehabilitative support, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and psychological support.

It will cost £10.5 million in 2021/2022 to run services, which are provided free of charge to patients and their loved ones. Contracted services from the NHS are budgeted at £6.98 million, meaning that £3.52 million needs to be raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. The Charity is extremely grateful to the local community for the continual dedication, commitment and generosity they show in supporting towards meeting this target.
