The world famous Giant´s Causeway in Ireland, on the County Antrim coast is an amazing formation of around 40.000 interlocking basalt columns arising from the sea. Hexagonal in shape and some rising to 12 metres in height, they were created by rapidly cooling lava from a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago.

The Giant´s Causeway is said to have been built by Fionn Mac Cumhaill (or ‘Finn Mac Cool’) when a Scottish giant, Benandonner was threatening to invade Ireland. In a fit of rage, Fionn threw the columns into the sea to create a path to Scotland, where he defeated Benandonner in combat. The Giant´s Causeway is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
