c1850 ANTIQUE 19thC JAPANESE EDO TAKAMAKI-E LACQUER TABAKOBON SMOKING BOX KISERU

Description

An antique Japanese late Edo period (1615-1868) lacquer tabako-bon or smoking compendium, dating to the mid 19th Century, circa 1850.

The box is decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e (raised lacquerwork) and gold hiramaki-e (flat lacquerwork) with highlights of hirame (gold dusted areas). The highly detailed takamaki-e work depicts cranes in flight above a mountainous island landscape with pine trees, buildings, bridges and figures in fishing boats.

The metalware mounts and accessories are of gilt bronze.  The tabako-bon has a gilt bronze swivel handle with hinges decorated with cranes and pine. The upper surface of the box is fitted with a removable brazier or 'hi-ire' for holding coals used to light a pipe. It is fitted with a loop handle with hinges cast with pine, and a domed gilt bronze cover engraved with further cranes amongst pines with a chrysanthemum bud finial.

The lower right drawer houses a 'haifuki' container for ash and waste, with a domed cover decorated in a similar design also with a chrysanthemum finial. To the left side the box is fitted with two smaller drawers, all drawers fitted with bronze chrysanthemum drawer pulls. The set is completed with a patinated bronze and bamboo kiseru (smoking pipe) decorated in applied silver with a tiger and figure, resting at the front.
