Aperture
action gentle and smooth. Overall condition is very good. Solid lens
construction, all Metal, no cheap plastics anywhere,
built to last. If you are thinking of buying this lens, please do
remember it comes fully checked and serviced at no extra cost to you as
the lens has been competitively priced at the low end of similar items
based on its condition. Service not only gave the lens extra life in
terms of functionality but it has also been checked for fungus. Fungus
can grow inside lenses in as little as a few months when lenses are not
stored in a prefect environment, and since these lenses were
manufactured some 4 or 5 decades ago, you can imagine how they can be
inside if they have not been serviced. Most sellers do not take the
necessary steps to make sure the lens is still fit for purpose. This
lens, although shows the normal aging, is fully functional, clean and
ready to use.
The lens has a modest weight and length, which increases only a little when you focus down. It has a dedicated screw-on hood. The minimum aperture of f/32 is more than most 135mm lenses. The preset mechanism is a joy to use and the focus ring is large and grippy. Sharpness is decent and perfect for portraiture. This lens was made for one particular specialty purpose, and that is to take great portraits. There is nothing to hate about this lens, it just takes some really smooth and creamy bokeh. It's really a wonderful lens. The sharpness is pretty good at wide open and gets better stop down. No other "135mm f2.8 lens" compare against the Pentacon or Meyer Orestor in terms of bokeh. It just rules over them when it comes to smoothness. What's better is that the 15 aperture blades make bokeh circles ("out of focus highlights") consistently circular at smaller apertures, thereby making the images more pleasing to look at.
Being a preset model makes it very easy to use and very useful for Video. Preset lenses are always favoured for Digital users as there is no Manual/Auto Switch and no Auto pin at the back, making really easy and fuss free to use with any Digital bodies without having to worry about compatible adapters. You set your desired aperture with the outer ring, then focus wide open and go to the desired f-stop with a flick of a finger to take the shot. The second ring allows to move the aperture ring in "step-less" or "click-less" mode, it's a wonderful feature and a pleasure to use.
It can be fitted to almost any camera with a suitable M42 adapter. M42 Adapters are widely and cheaply available on eBay for all digital SLRs including NIKON, SONY, PENTAX, PANASONIC to name a just a few brands. They come with or without Focus confirmation and some even come with a tripod mount. Try searching "M42 to canon" or "M42 to nikon" or "M42 to the camera brand that you own". On digital cameras you will be shooting in aperture priority or manual mode, depending on your confidence, focusing at the widest aperture and then taking the shot there or at the desired aperture setting.
As normal with old/used lenses, there might be some insignificant speckles of dust inside which do not affect in any way the lovely pictures it takes.
Comes with rear cap only and front metal lens hood
If you are a "Canon" or "Pentax K" user and require the adaptor, I could supply you one for £5.
