Author Biography

Jane Satchell McAllister serves as librarian of the Martin-Wall Local History Room in the Davie County Public Library. Debra Leigh Dotson volunteers in the history room, providing invaluable assistance in organizing and digitizing historical photographs, documents, and artifacts in the history room collection. Photographs in this book derive from the collections of the library, the Textile Heritage Center at Cooleemee, and several Davie County residents.

Featuring more than 200 vintage photographs, the book by Jane Satchell McAllister and Debra Leigh Dotson commemorates the area's communities, people, livelihoods, pastimes and traditions. The photographs come from the Martin-Wall History Room at the Davie County Public Library, the Textile Heritage Center in Cooleemee and private collections. The authors hope the book will "serve as an enjoyable visual way to learn Davie County history as well as guarantee the preservation of the rare images of the early county history." Some of the photographs have never been published. They chronicle the county's heritage from an agricultural society to commercial and retail development. The Cooleemee Plantation is included, as are images of past Davie County courthouses - even before the roads were paved. A book release party is planned for Monday, July 27 at 7 p.m. at the Davie County Public Library on North Main Street in Mocksville. Another will be held in conjunction with a meeting of the Davie Historical and Genalogical Society on Aug. 25 at the library. The 128-page softcover book sells for $21.99, and will be available at bookstores and other retailers, including Arcadia Publishing, 888-313- 2665,or on the internet at McAllister is the librarian in the Martin-Wall History Room, and Dotson is a volunteer there. McAllister, from Salisbury, Md., earned her bachelor's degree in business and history from Wake Forest University, a master's degree in business administration from the University of Virginia, and a master's degree in library science from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She is a volunteer with the Humane Society of Davie County, and enjoys traveling and reading. She hopes the photographs and stories in the book will inspire folks to visit the library to learn and share more of their own Davie photographs and stories. Dotson has worked on family and local history since she was 16 when her interest was sparked by her maternal grandmother. She holds a bachelor's degree in social anthropology from Brigham Young University, a master's degree in business administration from Wake Forest University, and has studied international business at Oxford University. Dotson also volunteers with the Winston-Salem Symphony Encore Society Archives Committee. She is a member of the Davie County Historical and Genealogical Society and serves on the board of the Yadkin Valley Historical Association. When not doing genealogical or historical research, Dotson enjoys reading and travel. She hopes this work will bring the history of Davie County to life through the images, and encourage an interest in local history.
