- Narrative: A painted glass panel at Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Early 16th C, appr. dim: 8 x 12 inches.
- This PANEL is an example of a type of glass-painting
peculiar to Switzerland. During the fifteenth century it became the
custom to present small panels of stained glass in commemoration of
important events such as a wedding, an election to an office, or the
erection of a public or private building. Both donor and recipient of
the gift could be an ecclesiastic, a nobleman, a town councillor, a
private citizen, or a whole corporation or association. The majority of
the panels bore the arms and name of the donor; the panel illustrated
here is unusual in that it possesses neither of these features. The
design is still essentially Gothic in feeling and does not show the
elaborate Renaissance decoration which began to appear during the first
quarter of the sixteenth century. The blue and green are pot-metal
colours, that is, they are contained in the glass and not painted on
it. The yellow details are painted on the back of the glass in silver
stain which turns yellow when fired. The only enamel paint used is
black, and the anonymous artist has skilfully picked out the details
and high-lights by removing the black enamel with a stick or quill
before the panel was fired. The top part of the column beneath the
capital on the left is a restoration.
