Mid 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Sarah Ann Kingsbury aged 7 - 1848. Worked in an attractive limited colour palette, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Sarah Ann was just seven years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with eight rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree with a fruit basket, tree, floral motif and bird to the left interspersed with flowers, whilst the linen to the right side has the same motifs but the fruit basket has been replaced by a flower basket. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. There is a bird to each side of the topmost fruits of the Tree with a bird, diamond and floral motifs by the bird on the left and floral motifs, a diamond, flower basket and tree near the bird on the right. The side branches of the Tree of Knowledge have floral motifs, a tulip, diamond, flower basket and small dog to each side whilst Adam and Eve have a fruit tree, floral motif and stag beside them with an additional dog next to the left side fruit tree. Sarah Ann's details and the date of 1848 are stitched to the left and right of the tree which are a bit tricky to read due to the colour of thread she has used. 

The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some very faint, small areas of staining. The colours of the thread are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Sarah Ann first stitched it.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
