Artist's Biography:

Leon (Arie) Fein, painter.
Born 1906 in Bialystok, Poland. Immigrated to Israel in 1926.

Was a member of the group ''New Horizons''.
Died in 1993.

Leon Fein was born in Bialystok, Poland, in 1906. His father was a small textile manufacturer. As a child he studied in "Cheder". Already as a child he began to draw.
In 1926 he immigrated to Israel (then British Mandatory Palestine) and settled in Haifa.
On the recommendation of the prominent German – Israeli artist Hermann Struck, he was accepted to study at Bezalel Academy of Arts in Jerusalem.
In 1929 he went to France. At first, he made a living by painting ships in Marseille. After that he came to Paris, where he earned a living as a porter. After about a year he returned to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv. There, he engaged in odd jobs such as painting, distributing "Davar" newspapers and more.
In the mid-1930s, he returned to Paris to study.
Upon his return, he was accepted for a part-time job at a health fund in Tel Aviv and as a security guard at the Reading power station.
During the 1940s, he rarely exhibited his works. For a long time, Fein was close to the painter Joseph Zaritsky, and even participated in the founding conference (1948) of the "New Horizons" group.
Fein’s paintings are notable for the influence of French expressive art. In his works from the 50s of the 20th century, the tendency towards geometric abstraction is prominent.
