1943 Press Photo Jose Soares with rubber latex after smoking process in Brazil
This is an original press photo. This is how the precious latex looks after it has been smoked by a Brazilian jungle worker., Jose Soares, veteran Brazilian rubber worker, is proud of his job, a 110-pound ball of rubber which has been smoked and is ready for shipment. When the jungle worker gets back to his house with his day's latex which flows from the tapped rubber trees, he builds a fire in a pit, places a low chimney over it and proceeds to smoke the fluid on a long stick or paddle. He pours cup after cup of the liquid over this mass, constantly turning the paddle. When he winds up with is a rubber ball on a stick. In perhaps 10 days he will have a ball weighing more than 100 pounds. After the stick is removed from the ball, the rubber is branded and piled up with others for shipment to the export port.
