Fabulous estate find! Antique 19th century Edwardian/Victorian sheer Battenburg tape lace maxi duster overlay jacket coat, off white in color.
Coats of this type were worn over evening or opera dresses. They were airy, covering the dress, but not completely, so that much of the opulence of the dresses could still be seen. Excellently preserved. These coats are rarely found in this maxi length.
Though some types of tape laces may be traced to the 16th century, Battenberg (also Battenburg) lace was first created when Queen Victoria of England named her son-in-law as the first Duke of Battenburg in the late 1800s. Thus a new style of tape lace called Battenburg was invented and became quite popular.
This timeless duster is made up of a mix of Battenburg and tape lace with large areas of what I believe to be Gros Point Lace. Beautiful lace is also present on the sleeves. There are exquisite areas of cutwork and fine embroidery throughout the duster. Such a stunning pattern of clothwork with much going on. This would be great for a Edwardian/Victorian wedding or themed event, or just a great garment to add to your wardrobe with many possible ways to wear.
Complete open front for a dramatic look to pair up with an antique gown of any sort. Because of this open front the measurements are difficult to gauge. Lying flat, pit to pit measures about 19" which leaves the garment open as seen in the last photo. The length is about 60" long taken from the top neckline to hem. There are no shoulder seams. I have numerous photos showing all areas of the duster with many close ups to see the exquisite lace work. I also have shown the duster shown over different colored slips which are not included in the auction.
