    Turbocharger Definition:

Turbocharger is a device driven by a turbine, and it is used to increase the performance and efficiency of an IC Engine by putting more compressed air into the engine cylinder.

    Types of the Turbocharger:

There are two main types of turbochargers:

    1. Variable geometry turbocharger (VGT):Variable Geometry Turbocharger is commonly used in diesel engines. This type uses a variable geometry turbine housing to regulate the boost pressure.
    2. Wastegate turbocharger:This turbocharger uses a wastegate to regulate the boost pressure. The wastegate opens to allow exhaust gases to bypass the turbine wheel which reduces its speed and thereby regulating boost pressure.

Each type of Turbocharger has unique advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of Turbocharger will depend on the engine's specific needs and the vehicle.

    Parts of Turbocharger:

    • Turbine wheel:

Exhaust gases spin the wheel by providing the energy to drive the compressor wheel.

    • Compressor wheel:

The rotating wheel compresses the incoming air and increases its density.

    • Housing:

The metal casing encloses the compressor wheel, shaft, and turbine wheel.

    • The rotational shaft:

It connects the compressor wheel and turbine wheel.

    • Wastegate:

A Wastegate is a valve regulating exhaust gas flow to the turbine wheel.

    Working Principle of Turbocharger:

A turbocharged engine's exhaust gases exit the engine and feed into the large opening of the turbine housing. As the gases move through the housing — which gets progressively smaller to keep velocity up — the energy spins the turbine wheel. It exits through the turbine housing outlet and into the vehicle's exhaust system.

On the opposite side of the turbocharger, the compressor wheel connects to the turbine wheel through a common shaft. The compressor wheel is contained in the compressor housing and sources its air supply externally to feed cool, fresh air into the engine. Air enters the large hole in the center of the compressor housing and is sucked through the compressor wheel's curved blades, exiting at the wheel's outer edge into the compressor housing. The housing's cross-section starts smaller and becomes progressively larger as it nears the housing outlet to help compress the air and increase its density. The increased air density results in powerful combustion leading to a greater engine power output. The Turbocharger's wastegate regulates the number of exhaust gases that reach the turbine wheel, allowing control over the boost pressure and avoiding engine overloading. The compressed air is then typically routed through an intercooler to remove heat from the air before entering the engine.

Add the appropriate amount of fuel to support the extra air forced into the engine, and power increases substantially.

    Advantages of Turbocharger:

    • Providing a performance upgrade
    • Reducing emissions
    • Increasing engine power output
    • Regulating boost pressure
    • Improving engine efficiency

    Installation precautions:

    • Clean the engine and replace the filter element. Drain the dirty oil, replace the engine oil filter and air filter, then filter and add clean lubricating oil until the oil dipstick is full.
    • Check the turbocharger. Check if the new turbocharger model matches the engine.
    • Check if there are any debris in the intake pipeline of the compressor and the exhaust pipeline of the turbine front engine.
    • Check the inlet and return pipes of the turbocharger. If a sealing gasket is used at the inlet and outlet of the turbocharger, check if there is any corrosion or deformation on the gasket. The gasket cannot block the inlet and outlet.
    • Pre lubrication booster.

    Maintenance precautions:

    • Do not drive immediately after starting

After starting the engine, especially in winter, it should be allowed to idle for a period of time in order to fully lubricate the bearings with lubricating oil before the turbocharger rotor runs at high speed. So, after starting, do not forcefully hit the accelerator to prevent damage to the turbocharger oil seal.

    • Do not immediately turn off the engine

After running at high speed for a long time, the engine cannot be immediately turned off. If the engine suddenly stops while it is hot, it can cause the oil trapped in the turbocharger to overheat and damage the bearings and shafts. Be especially careful to prevent the engine from suddenly stalling after slamming the accelerator pedal a few times.

    • Keep clean

When disassembling the turbocharger, it is important to keep it clean and block all pipe joints with clean cloth to prevent debris from falling into the turbocharger and damaging the rotor. When repairing, be careful not to collide and damage the impeller. If the impeller needs to be replaced, a dynamic balance test should be conducted on it. After reinstallation, remove the blockage. The lubricating oil pipeline should also be cleaned after running for a period of time.

    • Pay attention to maintenance

Before leaving and after receiving the vehicle, the connection of each airway pipe should be checked to prevent looseness or detachment, which may cause the turbocharger to fail and air short circuit to enter the cylinder.
