The dragon is one of several natural or mythical figures that are on the roof line of Chinese buildings and originally were believed to be protectors against fires.  Brightly glazed roof tiles were lined up in a row on the corners of the roof and were often led by the Immortal Man tile of a man riding on a rooster.
