This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.
The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see the Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1915/16, 6th edition revised. Details as follows :
Area covered : Glasgow and the Clyde, including the Upper Clyde, the Burns Country, and the Isle of Arran.
Contents : 160 pages of text plus a 90-page section of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. One maps and 2 sketch plans. Over 40 illustrations.
Overall condition : Very good, but slight external wear.
Maps : The first two maps missing. The map of the Clyde and the West Highlands is present and in excellent condition with very little wear and no markings or damage.
Covers : Normal wear. Slight superficial markings - see scan. Slight fading to black design. No other markings or damage.
Spine : Normal wear, but also with superficial markings. No other markings or damage.
Binding : Very good.
Pages : Very good. Normal wear. Some discolouration at edges. A few tiny pencil annotations in margins. No other markings or damage.
Other : Tiny pen inscription inside front cover.
