The plane was recently obtained from a wood plane collector’s sale, where it was well cared for, and shows in good condition.

This is a vintage wood plane, model No 4 smooth bottom made by Stanley Rule & Level Co. I believe the plane is a late type 6 made from 1888 to 1892.

The plane is embossed on the front toe NO 4, and behind the frog the sole is embossed with a letter S, and on the blade lateral lever adjustment handle is STANLEY and (2) PAT DATES 2-8-76" and "10-21-84 and stamped on the blade is the STANLEY" "PAT. AP'L 19, 92.

For Dating:
*type 6 1888 -1892 lateral adjustment lever with round disk, but still has type 5 two patent dates, "2-8-76" and "10-21-84"
*Prior to type 6 1888 -1892, Brass nut frog screw, right hand threads
*type 6 1888 -1892, iron stamped: "STANLEY" "PAT. AP'L 19, 92" (stamped is faint)
*type 6 1888-1892, frog receiver has two shallow grooves, parallel to the plane's sides,
*Prior type 7 1893 – 1892 brass nut.. "BAILEY'S PATENT" "AUG. 31, 1858, AUG. 6, 1867
*prior to type 7 1893 - 1899, plane number casting close together (NO 4)
*type 7 1893 -1899, S (Sessions Foundry) embossed on sole behind frog

The lever cap is plain, the front knob and tote has barrel brass nuts. The blade depth adjuster knob is approx. 1" diameter.

The plane is 9” long, has a 2 3/8" wide base, the blade is 2" wide and 6 7/8” long.

The plane is in good condition for the era,…. The finish on the wood was cracking and flaking off—and was stripped and refinished close to original color,……, the black japanning was all flaking off---was stripped and repainted,….……As with the vintage of the plane, there is some normal use wear, a few dings, and surface scratches, and some discoloration, all as noted from the photos.

The plane is SOLD AS IS with NO RESERVE. e-mail questions before bidding.
