A most interesting blue and white transfer print bowl.

As always we are grateful to our many supporters who correct us when we have not got it quite right.

We believe this bowl is Spode of the earliest 1784 - 1805.

The age can be seen by the condition - old breaks painstakingly repaired, chips on the raised base which now are so worn they are part of the bowl, the colour of the porcelain and the glazing faults. Most important of all is the 'S' on the base.

The pattern is a mix of oriental influence and cameo scenes. The base has a large picture of a church in ruins and a pronounced bump in the very centre. There are 4 scenes around the sides with large flowers and leaves linking them. The flowers may be poppies?
The outside of the bowl has 3 different scenes and more flowers. There is a definite oriental look to the patterns.
As well as the underglaze 'S' on the base there are a series of concentric circles which correspond with the bump on the other side.
Hard to tell if they are a spiral or circles.
