"The Wild Horses of White Mesa is the second installment of the Long Dusty Trail series, and tells of Jim Highsaw and Josh Randles efforts to save their army contracts for supplying beef and horses to Ft. Sumner, New Mexico. When the snow storm of the century kills off most of their herds, they are forced to resort to catching wild horses to fill those contracts. Born in 1947 in Guymon Oklahoma, Mel Adkins a true adventurer, has been a cattle rancher, team penning rodeo cowboy, and a trail ride owner/operator in the Wasatch National Forest high above Beaver Utah. He has rode half broke colts on cattle drives on the Old Spanish Trail, and shivered in the frosty mornings of a Rocky Mountain fall roundup. He has lived a part of the life he writes about. He has resided in Oklahoma where he owned and operated Adkins Cattle Company, and Alaska where he worked as a gold miner, oilfield roughneck, commercial fisherman, and an Iditarod sled dog racer. He now lives in southern Utah with his wife and daughter.
