In 1846, a 23 year old named Uylsse Nardin founded his namesake watch company. Despite growing up in the Jura Mountains, he was deeply intrigued by the ocean and decided to start producing nautical timekeeping instruments. He ultimately led his company to becoming one of the first timepiece manufacturers to engineer Marine Chronometers.

Marine Chronometers were hugely important in the 19th century, proving essential for safely navigating the seas; Ulysse Nardin’s were held in the highest esteem.

The pioneering partnership between Ulysse Nardin and the U.S. Navy began in the early 1900s, when the Washington Naval Observatory organized a competition for ‘Precision Torpedo Boat Timepieces’. The goal of the competition was to supply the Navy with the best available onboard Chronometers. The timepieces, given to superior naval officers, were meant to provide the torpedo boats & first submarines with a timekeeping precision as accurate and reliable as those on the largest naval vessels. Ulysse Nardin participated in numerous of these competitions.

In 1907, at the United States Naval Observatory, 83 American, English, French and Swiss competitors submitted pieces for the Deck Chronometer competition. Several tests took place over five months, and the Ulysse Nardin House set the performance record. As a result of this achievement, the brand entered the US market by becoming a supplier to the US Navy.

Consequently, Ulysse Nardin began providing pocket Chronometers to the United States Navy. It would go on to supply the Naval Forces of more than 50 other Nations, including Great Britain, Russia, and Japan, with Marine Chronometers in addition to Chronometer Pocket Watches.

By invitation from the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, Ulysse Nardin attended the 2018 Congressional Medal of Honor Convention organized for the first time at the prestigious Naval Academy in Annapolis.
