ORIGINAL VINTAGE/ANTIQUE IMAGE - Very difficult image to find.  The Antietam National Cemetery lodge house taken in 1877 by William H. Tipton of Gettysburg Pennsylvania.  The image shows the lodge house and some visitors at the gate.  The cemetery is on Shephardstown Road just outside the main town portion of Sharpsburg Maryland.

The lodge was designed in 1867 and commemorates the soldiers who fought bravely at the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862.  The cemetery contains the remains of over 4,500 Union soldiers.  It is part of the National Military cemetery system and is managed by the National Park Service.
