Selling here is a mixed edition set of Francis Nichols' 'British Compendium....', printed in London. Volume one in two parts, bound in two volumes, an eighth edition, 1738. Volume two a third edition, 1729. Volume three 'The Irish Compendium....', a third edition, 1735. this set retaining three hundred and thirteen armorial and portrait plates, including a map of Scotland.

12mo, three parts in four volumes uniformly bound in period gilt ruled full calf, upper board to volume one part two detached, volume one with small circular adhesive label at foot, spines gilt decorated and numbered, with red morocco labels, all page edges speckled red. Period plain endpapers with previous owners bookplates.

The books measure 9cm by 12.5cm.

The contents meeting collation:
Volume one, in two parts: [8], 36, 544, [6]; [2], 385, [9]pp, with one hundred and sixteen plates numbered one to one hundred and twenty four, plus the frontispiece to part two. Eight plates are blank.
Volume Two: vii, [1], 520 [i.e. 490], [4] p, [1], 87, [1]pp, with eighty two plates numbered one to eighty seven, plus the frontispiece and map of Scotland. Five plates are blank.
Volume three: [2], viii, 171, [1], 163-364, [4], 117, [15]pp, with eighty three engraved armorial plates numbered one to eighty four, plus the frontispiece and a further twenty eight armorial plates preceeding the Supplement. One plate is blank.

Condition: One front board detached as noted above, with it the frontispiece to that volume: hinges variously cracked but otherwise well attached with some straining, spine ends chipped as seen, general wear and abrasion, notably to spines. Each textblock firm and contents in very good condition, clean if lightly toned with occasional minor spots and marks.
