John P. Doremus was an important Photographer noted for his images along
the Mississippi River and Its Tributaries series of Steroviews. In 1874 he hired
a boat builder in Minneapolis to build a floating Gallery to his specifications.
The floating Gallery was named Success. Success was placed on a barge
that was towed behind a paddle steamer. Doremus kept a journal of his Photography
business, and his Mississippi River travels from 1867-1891.
John P. Doremus was born in New Jersey to Parents who were
ancestors of Huguenot Immigrants of France. Doremus was a highly active member
of the Mason’s and achieved great notoriety.
He was married to Sarah Schoonmaker, and they had six children by 1867
when his 15-year journal began. Doremus had been successfully operating a Photographic
Studio at 85 Main St., Paterson NJ when he opened his second gallery at 172
Main St. It is believed that Doremus
learned to be a Photographer from E.&.HT Anthony. When Doremus passed away,
his wife sold his negatives to E.&H.T. Anthony who noted Doremus’s name on his
views.
