This a a fabulous antique Victorian set of watercolours by G Rowney & Co. Who were print

publishers, printers, suppliers of artists' materials.

The box includes the following used watercolours (with the printed labels); yellow ochre; light red; burnt sienna; Indian red; Chrome yellow; crimson lake; indigo; gamboge (deep yellow colour); Prussian blue; sap green; emerald green

The ceramic mixing palette is solid but has been damaged in the past with a single crack and with signs or repair and has the makers mark clearly stamped on the reverse.

The box is in excellent condition and the interior is beautifully decorated with the following inscription: “G Rowney & Co. Artist Colormen & Pencil Makers, London, W, England”

It was distributed by Eveleigh Bishop Ltd of Briggate & Albion Place in Leeds.

Richard and Thomas Rowney began in business in London in 1783 selling perfumes and wig powder, becoming artists' colourmen at the end of the century, and later developing a lithographic printing business. The company remained in central London until 1969, when it moved to Bracknell; at the same time the last member of the family Tom Rowney, sold the business to Morgan Crucible; in 1983 it was re-sold to the Daler-Board Company becoming Daler-Rowney. Trade card in Heal Collection (Heal,89.135) advertises "Rowney & Forster, Superfine Colour Preparers & Varnish Makers to their Majesties the Prince & Princess of Wales and Principal Artists..."
