The note has a complex design on both sides, on the face is an image of the head of a girl at the upper right, who has a hairstyle, typical of the period 1910-1920. Underneath is the date - Berlin, den 1. August 1917 and beneath that is the word 'Reichsschuldenverwaltung', this translates as The Reich's Debt Administration.

NB Historical Details -The Reichsschuldenverwaltung was a body set up initially in Prussia in 1820, predating the German Empire and the Weimar Republic. By the time this note was issued its functions included - overseeing the administration of the German Reich's debts, the supervision of both the Reich's war treasury and the issuing of Reichsbanknotes. One of its other tasks was the subsequent appropriate confiscation and destruction of damaged or out of date Reichsbanknotes issued by the Reichsbank.

Underneath this are 10 signatories of members of the Reichsschuldenverwaltung, that of its President, Alexander James von Bischoffshausen is the signature at the top left on the first line of signatures. He was in office as President of the Reichsschuldenverwaltung from the end of 1907 until the middle of 1918. The denomination as '5' appears below the image of the girl at the right, at the bottom left corner and at each corner  surrounding the girls image. The reverse has a complex mosaic design throughout, with the denomination as '5' at each corner. There is black text overprinted on the background as follows - 'Darlehnskassenschein Fünf Mark' with a large figure 5 below.

The Serial number is in Red at the top right corner on the reverse as follows - X-14489318.

The note is sized 127 x 80mm.

The note is in crisp and clean condition, it has not seen any circulation. It has a light ripple to the paper at the centre of the top edge probably from bundle packing of a stack of notes, it grades in at least almost UNC. It is quite a hard to find type.

NB Historical Details  - By the time this note was issued it was just enough money to buy about 5 loaves of bread! Only 5 years later by 1922, you would have needed 33 of these 5 Mark notes to buy a single loaf of bread, as inflation really began to take off in Germany. In January 1922 the Reichsbank issued a 10,000 Mark note and by November that year a 50000 Mark note was issued. on 1st February 1923 a 100,000 Mark note was issued, by the 20th February a 1 Million Mark note was produced. In July 1923 there was an issue of  2, 5,10, 20 and 50 Million Mark notes. In August 1923 inflation was increasing so fast that a 100 Million Mark note was introduced. In early September that year, a Billion Mark note was issued, closely followed a week later by notes of 5 and 10 Billion Marks. On October 1st 1923 the first 20 Billion Mark note was issued, followed by 50 Billion notes and then 5 days later by a 200 Billion Mark denomination, culminating at the end of October with the issue of a 1 Trillion Mark note. It was only with the introduction of a new currency, the Rentenmark, in November 1923, that the scourge of inflation was eventually controlled. By October 1924, the Reichsbank began issuing Reichsmark banknotes again and these notes ranked 1 for 1 with the Rentenmark banknotes.

The last issue of Rentenmark notes was in 1937 and both the Rentenmark and the Reichsmark notes were replaced by the Deutschmark at a rate of 10 Rentenmark/Reichsmark to 1 Deutsche Mark for small amounts. For larger sums the rate was 10 Rentenmark/Reichsmark to 65 Pfennigs, all this took place in June 1948.

I ALWAYS COMBINE POSTAGE COSTS ON MULTIPLE WINS _ PLEASE DO NOT PAY FOR ITEMS UNTIL YOU RECEIVE MY COMBINED POSTAGE INVOICE IF YOU ARE BIDDING ON MORE THAN ONE ITEM!

IMPORTANT - Most of my items are sent to the UK from my new location in Italy by Certificated Airmail for safety reasons, and INTERNATIONAL BUYERS please note that any item or group of items which totals more than £30 will have to be sent by tracked delivery for the safety and security of your item - there can be I am afraid no exceptions to this.

This is because at least 30% of items sent to buyers in these locations in the last few years for some reason do not arrive. The cost of insurance will add about £10 to the cost of the item.

I always combine postage and shipping on more than one item won.  If you think my postage and shipping charges are unreasonable then please contact me before bidding, for details for postage costs to UK and other European destinations and all other addresses Worldwide, please refer to the Payment Instructions below:-

A note about feedback

I do not wait for you to leave Feedback for me, like some sellers do, so Transactions will receive positive feedback soon after payment is made. I strive to earn 100% perfect 'five-star' scores from you, my customer. The star scores are very important because eBay uses them to determine the visibility of my items in search results. So before you leave your Feedback for me, if anything about the transaction did not meet your expectations, please let me know and at least give me the chance to put things right, before leaving negative Feedback or contacting eBay by opening a case for non-delivery or any other problem.

Always contact me first before contacting eBay or opening a case, I will always help, I will block bidders who open cases without contacting me first!

PLEASE NOTE THAT MOST OF MY ITEMS ARE NOW MAILED FROM MY CURRENT LOCATION IN ITALY, posted the same day that payment is received or the next working day after payment, if made at the weekend. When I am in the UK, I may post from there. Some deliveries may take longer than normal to arrive, this is not my fault, merely the result of the RECENT problems since March 2020, experienced within the International Postal System!

Though happily, now, most of the Postal Systems around the world are back to almost normal, but there still can be some delays to some destinations.
