DENMARK/GERMANY - OLD NOTE - PLEBISCITE AREA OF SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN & NORTH DENMARK 1920 1 MARK  ISSUE.

HØJER (Danish) - HOYER (German) - HUUGER (North Frisian), is a small town in south Denmark, in the Region of Southern Denmark on the west coast of the Jutland peninsula. It was the seat of the former Højer municipality. From 2007, because of local government reforms, Højer municipality ceased to exist due to the fact that it was merged with Bredebro, Løgumkloster, Nørre-Rangstrup, Skærbæk, and Tønder municipalities to form the new Tønder Municipality.

Interesting banknote this - it was issued at the time of the Referenda held in towns and Cities of Schleswig-Holstein following the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, where the people on both sides of the German/Danish border were allowed to vote on the issue of whether they were to be governed in the future by Germany or Denmark.

This Banknote is for 1 Mark. The note is in Black on light Bluish Green paperboth sides. On the face it features the Coat of Arms of Højer, while at each  corner is the denomination as '1' within a small square. At the left side and right side of the note, near the edges the denomination is as 'Eine Mark'. To the left is the following Text in German - 'Gültig Bis 1 Monat nach der Bekanntmachung'. At the right is further text - 'Einlösung erfolgt durch die Stadtkasse Hoyer d. 10 April 1920'. All this means - Valid up to 1 month after the announcement. Encashment is carried out by the Town's Treasury Office. Hoyer d. April 10, 1920

Below the text at the right, the note is signed by d. Burgermeister. The note's Serial Number is at the lower left - 2013.

On the reverse of the note is a large illustration of the small town of Hojer in its rural setting. At the top of the note printed over the picture frame style border is the denomination as 'Eine Mark' in script. At the bottom of the note within the border design is an image of a series of sheep, three facing right and three facing left. At the centre of each side at the edges are two hay bales.

The note was designed by L.Thaysen, whose name is at the bottom left corner.

The note therefore has just German text and fairly neutral imagery on both sides.

The note is sized - 106 x 60mm.

This old note is crisp and clean, it has almost no handling and no circulation, it has a tiny light corner turn only, so therefore grades to a/UNC.

HISTORICAL EXPLANATION - This note was in circulation at the time of the Referenda held in Villages, Communes, Towns and Cities of Schleswig-Holstein following the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, where the people on both sides of the German/Danish border were allowed to vote on the issue of whether they were to be governed in the future by Germany or Denmark, this note is from one of the areas that voted for Germany. The result in Hojer was 581votes for Germany - 72.6% and only 219 votes for Denmark - 27.4%, but because Højer was in Zone 1 where the result was based on the votes in the entire Zone, where only 25.1%  of the votes were for Germany, with 74.9% voting for Denmark, so the Municipality of Højer was returned to Denmark.

I ALWAYS COMBINE POSTAGE COSTS ON MULTIPLE WINS _ PLEASE DO NOT PAY FOR ITEMS UNTIL YOU RECEIVE MY COMBINED POSTAGE INVOICE IF YOU ARE BIDDING ON MORE THAN ONE ITEM!

IMPORTANT - All my items are sent to the UK from my new location in Italy by Certificated Airmail for safety reasons, and INTERNATIONAL BUYERS please note that any item or group of items which totals more than £30 will have to be sent by insured delivery for the safety and security of your item - there can be I am afraid no exceptions to this.

Please note that as a matter of course I do not now post to some countries where the postal system seems to be unreliable. Therefore those buyers from RUSSIA, CHINA, INDIA, BANGLADESH, PAKISTAN, INDONESIA, MALAYSIA,  SAUDI ARABIA, MEXICO, ISRAEL & CHILE who wish to bid on my notes will have to contact me first and be aware that any items won will be sent by chargeable INSURED TRACKABLE postage. This is because at least 30% of items sent to buyers in these locations in the last few years for some reason do not arrive. The cost of insurance will add about £10 to the cost of the item.

I always combine postage and shipping on more than one item won.  If you think my postage and shipping charges are unreasonable then please contact me before you make a bid. For full details of shipping and postage costs to UK and other European destinations and all other addresses Worldwide, please refer to the Payment Instructions below:-

A note about feedback

I do not wait for you to leave Feedback for me like some sellers do, so Transactions will receive positive feedback soon after payment is made. I strive to earn 100% perfect 'five-star' scores from you, my customer. The star scores are very important because eBay uses them to determine the visibility of my items in search results. So, before you leave your Feedback for me, if anything about the transaction did not meet your expectations, please let me know and at least give me the chance to put things right, before leaving negative Feedback or contacting eBay.

Always contact me first before contacting eBay or opening a case, I will always help, I will block bidders who open cases without contacting me first!

PLEASE NOTE MOST ITEMS ARE NOW MAILED FROM MY CURRENT LOCATION IN ITALY, posted the same day that payment is received or the next working day after payment, if made at the weekend. When I am in the UK, I may post from there. Some deliveries may take longer than normal to arrive, this is not my fault, merely the result of the WELL KNOWN problems since March 2020, experienced within the International Postal System!

Happily now, most of the International postal services are back to normal, though there still can be delays to some destinations.
