Mid 19th century needlepoint - c.1860 or slightly later. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The background of the gauze has been stitched in a shade of pale green which is dominated by a stag leaping across a fallen tree trunk which is framed by bushes and shrubs.
There are a few small areas of stitch loss to the background and one is able to see through these that the gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age. The colours of the wool have mellowed from their original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. As can also be seen from the photographs, the edges of the gauze are frayed. The needlepoint is also slightly skewiff.

Measures 14 1/4" x 13" to the edges of the stitching.

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
