Seated double Buddha statue of Gautama Buddha and future Maitreya Buddha, lacquered wood, Mon state, Burma, 17th to 18th century

Very rare image of the present and the future Buddha, seated on a double lotus throne, very likely from Mon State. Images from the Mon State often depicted with plain head, similar to Buddha statues from Bagan. Black lacquered wood with remnants of gilding.

A very similar image with almost the same double lotus base is illustrated in “Burmese Crafts” by S. Fra-ser-Lu (see reference below).

According to the statue at Dhammayan-Gyi Pagoda, Bagan, the image on the left shows Maitreya Buddha, on the right, Gautama, the historical Buddha.

Mounted on a heavy museum pedestal.
