Small late 18th century linen and wool work sampler initialled AD/ED etc - 1785. This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with five rows of alphabet letters, whilst the middle section contains a row of the numbers 1 through to 11 with the date of 1785 below which has the initials I.A to the left and A.D/E.D/I.D to the right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a rows of four crowns with two rows of sets of family initials below separated by a row of heart motifs.
The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a few small dark marks. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when it was first stitched. This photograph also shows remnants of paper and old glue residue around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.

Measures 7" x 10"

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
