Writeup | Writeup from MB 112: Northwest Africa 16101 (NWA 16101) Mali, (Northwest Africa) Purchased: 2023 Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3) History: A single 10.72 kg sample was reportedly found in northern Mali near the border with Algeria. John Higgins (Outerspacerocks) purchased the sample from a Mauritanian meteorite dealer in May 2023. Physical characteristics: Stone has an irregular shape and is coated with a dull black fusion crust. The cut face shows many visible chondrules set within a dark brown matrix. Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample shows a chondritic texture composed of close-packed chondrules with an average apparent diameter of 441µm (n=139) set within an opaque, fine-grained matrix. Chondrule phenocrysts are zoned and rare chondrules contain isotropic glassy mesostasis. Additional minerals are troilite, chromite and apatite. Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) Olivine (Fa15.5±12.0, Fe/Mn=40.4±23.3, n=28; Cr2O3 in ferroan Ol = 0.14_0.1, n=23); low Ca-pyroxene (Fs6.8±5.7Wo0.5±0.3, Fe/Mn=15.9±8.4 n=20); pigeonite (Fs16.0±12.6Wo6.2±1.6, Fe/Mn=16.4±10.7, n=3). Classification: Ordinary chondrite (L3 C-S1 W1). Based on mineral compositions, chondrule diameters and magnetic susceptibility, sample is an L3 chondrite. Based on Cr2O3 compositions in ferroan chondrules and CL, sample is L3.2-3.4 Specimens: John Higgins (Outerspacerocks) holds the main mass. A polished thin section and a crusted endcut weighing 162.8 g are on Deposit at App. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
