1971 Press Photo Professor Robert Kovsen demonstrates Apollo 14's "thumper"

This is an original press photo. Robert L. Kovach, professor of geophysics at Stanford University, demonstrates an active seismic device, called the thumper, that Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell will use to detonate 21 firecracker-size explosions on the moon, when the Apollo 14 spacemen explore the lunar surface February 5. Study of the resulting vibrations will give scientists new information on the shape, structure and thickness of the outer lunar crust. Photo measures 8 x 10 inches. Photo is dated 01-29-1971.
