In 1991, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic commissioned ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and conductor/composer Carl Davis to co-write an operatic work commemorating the esteemed orchestra's 150th anniversary .


The composition , LIVERPOOL ORATORIO , served as McCartney's first foray into the world of classical music as well as a moving tribute to his industrial hometown


Comprised of eight movements , the oratorio follows the life of Liverpudlian native (and obvious McCartney stand-in) Shanty , from his World War II-era birth and boyhood to his working-class adulthood and troubled marriage , before concluding on a sublimely transcendent note celebrating the everyday poetry of the common man


This program presents the world premiere of LIVERPOOL ORATORIO at the city's Anglican Cathedral on June 28 , 1991 , with co-composer Davis conducting the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra through a stirring performance accompanied by a full boy's choir and soloists Jerry Hadley on tenor , Willard White on baritone , and Kiri Te Kanawa and Sally Burgess on soprano
