Our Vintage Pre & Post War Japanese fountain pen

All our celluloid and ebonite vintage pre & post-war are collectible items. They were obtained from a fountain pen depository factory that produces fountain pens for discontinued brands such as Nishio, HHH, Lance, and Hokueito, Olympia, and some of the unbranded Japanese Fountain pens carried a forgotten history and legacy. The war in Japan resulted in all manufacturing factories stopping the production of goods and converting to producing weapons for the war effort after the war many companies that stopped producing products found it difficult to continue hence the factory kept most of the fountain pen that was produced before the war began. And now, The pens that were in the factory were obtained by us, undergo a repair process by replacing the filler system if needed, changing the nibs into Semi-Flex Vintage nibs or modern German nibs, and polishing the body of age rust and dirt.

So every pen that is in our auction is one in the world and cannot be reproduced anymore. So bear in mind that every pen in our vintage collection is a rare and precious artifact/collectible

*History of Japanese-Made Pre-War Fountain Pen*

Other than the big three (Sailor, Pilot, and Platinum) there were many Japanese fountain pen manufacturers that existed before in the 1930s and possessed as much history and tradition as the famous Japanese stationery company today.

During the 1920s and 1930s, the popularity of fountain pens in Japan grew rapidly, with many people using them for both personal and professional purposes. Hence many independent small fountain pen brand began to emerge and compete with each other but at the same time, too supply one another with pen parts (Because at that time, all fountain pen was standardized and used traditional material such as ebonite and celluloid) Fountain pen manufacturers began to experiment with new materials and technologies, such as the introduction of piston fillers and vacuum fillers.

However, the outbreak of World War II in 1941 had a significant impact on the Japanese fountain pen industry. Production of luxury goods such as fountain pens was restricted during the war, and many manufacturers were forced to shift their focus to producing military equipment instead.

Despite these challenges, few Japanese fountain pen companies survived & continued to operate after the war. The industry began to slowly recover, with now remaining manufacturers once again focusing on creating high-quality writing instruments for the domestic and international markets.

After more than 84 years, We were able to acquire some of the remaining New Old Stock that was available during a pre-war era that was in the depository.

This pen carries the history and legacy of Fountain Pen Company for more than 100 years.

This pen is truly a piece of fountain pen history that was once forgotten and now retold to you.

*Nail Nib*

Japanese Vintage Fountain pen uses a lot of Semi-Flex nib configurations. Thider strokes are because, Semi-flex nibs allow writers to write broas in and between each stoke by pressing on the nib, giving the writer the flexibility to write calligraphy. Not only semi-flex nib is popular among vintage, but nail-type nibs are also among those who were very popular in the 30's-50s era.

Nail Nib means 2 things, Strength integrity, and design. Nail nib is designed with limited flex with the purpose of creating a very strong rigid nib similar to manifold nibs. Because people back in 30s still use carbon paper, a strong writing instrument is essential to ensure the task is completed efficiently. Secondly, is the design, it's designed like a nail, the nib is the position inside the feed, and the feed covers the whole nib just like our nails hence the name nail nib

*How to Use*

The sac system has a mechanism that helps you to intake a huge amount of ink in the barrel by squeezing the bulb filler which fundamentally became the pedal stool for converter technology

To use the pen

  1. Unscrew the pen
  2. Insert the nib into an ink well
  3. Squeeze the rubber sac located at the end of the filler
  4. Once the ink has entered the sac, slowly squeeze again the sac to help expedite the ink coming down to the nib
  5. And screw back the pen in place and begin writing!

Item Condition Grade for Engeika Vintage Fountain Pen: Please Check Our Vintage Fountain Pen Grade list and read the item's condition list to see the Pen's actual grade ratings

All our pens are original and authentic because they're sourced directly from the owners of fountain pen collectors, factory owners in the 40s who's sons/daughters have sold their grandparent's fountain pen old stock and hence cant be sourced online. But for an even more detailed description of our pens condition, we have provided a grade tier list to help you determine if this is the pen for you

S Tier - Almost like Brand New: This pen is in exceptional condition, almost as if it were brand new. There are no signs of rust on the clip, and the original filling system is still intact and does not require replacement. The cap and piston filler, if applicable, screw on and off smoothly without any difficulties. The nib color is vivid with limited to no scratches. Any hairline scratches are barely visible, and there are no cracks on the pen. The pen feels smooth, polished, and shiny.

A Tier - Excellent Condition: This pen is in excellent condition with only minor flaws. There may be small chips on the nib, but no rust is present. Hairline scratches may be visible on the body, cap, and nib. The nib color remains consistent, although small scratches may be seen upon close inspection. The pen can be easily screwed on and off, and the filling system works properly. The original filling system is intact with no cracks on the body of the pen. The pen still feels smooth, polished, and shiny.

B Tier - Good Condition: This pen is in good condition and is perfectly usable. It may have some rust on the clip and trim. The nib color may have changed due to weathering or ink stains. The filling system has been replaced with a new one, possibly because the original one had hardened over time and needed replacement. There are no cracks on the pen, but there may be hairline scratches present.

C Tier - Fair Condition: This pen is in fair condition and is functional, but it has noticeable scratches on the body and cap. The trim may be rusted or chipped. Although there are no cracks, the filling system also requires replacement. The nib color may have changed, or the nib itself may have been re-polished.

F Tier - Poor Condition: This pen is still writable, but it is cosmetically in a terrible state. A major refurbishment has been conducted to restore the pen to an acceptable condition, but in the process, many of its original characteristics have been lost.

Please note that this item condition grade is based on general standards and may vary depending on the specific criteria and expectations of different collectors or sellers.
