During the years just before World War II, many automotive manufacturers sent their cars’ headlights on a journey. They started flanking the car’s radiator and grille and by the end of civilian production in early 1942, many headlights had migrated into their final destination, the leading edge of the front fenders or within the car’s nose.
This 1940 Chevy was no exception. This example was built in GM’s St. Louis, Missouri factory in 1939 (EIN code 3). It is an older build and shows very nicely except for a few small blemishes visible at close range.
The eye-popping yellow exterior looks great in the Florida sun. The engine bay is tidy and the sideview mirrors are mounted to the roof.
This pre-war Chevy rolls on Kumho Ecsta radials, size 225/45R17. Each one is mounted to an aluminum rally, five-spoke rim. The tires and wheels are all in good order.
Under the hood is a 350 CID small-black Chevrolet V-8 engine. Driver convenience features include power steering and power brakes. The car is also a tilt steering column. The engine is backed by an automatic transmission.
Inside, the tan vinyl-and-cloth interior is in good, overall order. The bucket seats look great, the matching tan carpet is in decent order while the yellow metal dash looks sharp and houses Auto Meter and Auto Gage gauges. There are assorted trim pieces that are factory original, including the dashboard center section. A Grant three-spoke steering wheel with a colored rim faces the driver and there’s a tilt steering column. The inner door panels with cupholders match the seats’ condition. A Boss flatscreen infotainment system and a floor-mounted shifter complete the interior.
For 1940, Chevrolet launched the KA Series with the Deluxe and the better equipped Master Deluxe. From 1940 an even more expensive version based on the Master Deluxe was launched called the Special Deluxe. The updated corporate appearance introduced a concealed radiator behind a façade with a grille.
