In the USSR, it was generally accepted that on February 23, 1918, the Red Guard units won their first victories near Pskov and Narva over the regular troops of the Kaiser’s Germany. 
These first victories became the “birthday of the Red Army.

The First World War (July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918) was the first military conflict on a global scale between two major coalitions of powers: the Entente states (Russia, Great Britain, France) and the bloc of Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria).
