*** Yellow Spot Lantern-fly - Pyrops candelaria
Pyrops candelaria (Laternaria candelaria and Fulgora candelaria in older literature) is a species of planthopper that lives in Vietnam, Hong Kong, Laos, Thailand and other parts of southeast Asia. It is the type of the genus Pyrops erected by Spinola in 1839. Members of this genus are sometimes called lanternflies. Despite their name, lanternflies do not emit light. Like all lanternflies, P. candelaria feeds on plant sap (from longan and lychee trees, among others). Its long, slender proboscis is used to pierce tree bark to reach the sap. They are often sought out by collectors. Lantern-fly (Pyrops candelaria) to be found commonly on Longan and Lychee trees, and occasionally on Acacia and other trees in tropical regions. Usually they sit quietly on the tree trunk or branches where their coloration is quite cryptic, but if disturbed they fly revealing the bright yellow hindwings with their black borders. They are called Lantern-flies or Lantern Bugs because it was once supposed that the elongate rostrum had bioluminescent properties. The snout does contain a number of delicate sense organs, but its function is not known. The nymphs are gregarious and produce copious wax so are festooned with long waxy filaments which makes a flattid infestation on a tree very distinctive. The adults are also gregarious and in Africa a species is dimorphic and the adults sit together on a cluster representing a red flower with unopened green buds above. Located in Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Yunnan; Abroad recorded in India and Sikkim. Payment
