Awesome and extremely rare amber color crystal pear shaped claret jug wine decanter mounted into beautiful silver plated pewter Historismus / Renaissance Revival styled base, fitted with a mermaid styled handle and hinged lid, on a wide base.
This amber claret jug boasts a stunning pewter vessel, under the theme of Bacchus and wine drinking. The lid, neck and body are decorated with bands of vine leaves and grapes celebrating wine drinking culture and hinting the claret jug's purpose - serving precious wines.
The has a wide band that features a snarling lion muzzle, bull skulls on the sides and two Latin proverbs - "In Vino Veritas" - "The truth is in the wine", and "Vinus Cautis Inocuum" - Wine Causes Addiction".
The main armorial shield on the front is empty and is meant for placing heraldic shield or inscription. On the sides of the body there are two medallions of Bacchus god of winemaking and Ariadna, his wife, in laurel garlands and set amongst cornucopia.
The handle is in the shape of a beautiful winged mermaid / siren, dressed only in a wide belt, with the two long twisting tails tangling around the bar, as if snakes.
Amber claret jug is made of Bohemian crystal at Theresienthal, a well-known Bavarian glass maker, and cast in pewter base by Josef Lichtinger, in Munich, Germany. This claret jug was produced part of the limited edition series in the period of 1870 - 1880 of which there is a numerous available evidence. Total of 25 various shapes claret jugs were produced by Josef Lichtinger and this is one of them. In 1897 the factory went bankrupt.
There is a scratched signature of the master to the bottom, the best I could make of it is "Wolkdenberger".
The claret jug is overall in a good condition, with the original patina. The crystal is chipped on the neck, right above the lion’s head - please see the last photo. A few scratches on the base.

Returns
Returns are accepted within 30 days from item receipt. Refunds will be made after return of the item in original condition.
