Small early 20th century French sampler by Yvonne Durand - 1814. Worked in red wool on even weave gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with three rows of alphabet letters, whilst the lower section contains Yvonne's name and the date of 1914 which have a darning patch to their right. The top and bottom edges of the gauze are then stitched with a meandering foliate border pattern, whilst both side edges have a different example of border pattern running down them
The gauze has overall discolouration with its age, very slightly inj places with a small amount of minor creasing. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colour of the thread appears good though it is likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century ebonised frame which is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 6 3/4" across x 5 3/4" (sight size) and 8" x 7" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
