Small mid 19th needlepoint - c.1860 or slightly later. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The gauze is dominated by a winsone scene of a young boy clad in tartan with a feather in his hat sitting astride a chestnut pony whilst his pet Highland terrier trot along beside them. This charming scene is framed by shrubs and flowers with an expanse of water in the distance.
The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with patches of staining from where certain shades of the wool have bled. There is a split running down the left side edge to the horse's back, an area of damage to the right of its head, another to the right of the terrier and a couple of much smaller areas elsewhere. One is able to see through these that the needlepoint is sitting on a similar coloured backing cloth. The needlepoint is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are almost certain to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a mid/late 20th century burr walnut frame which is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 8 3/4" across x 9 1/4" (sight size) and 11 1/4" x 12" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
