On auction, we have 2 art books from the library of Xavier Tizoc Martinez, noted Mexican American artist. He is considered the founder of California Tonalism. The books are:
1. "Loan Exhibition of Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings, Etchings and Sculpture" by Arthur B. Davies. This was published in 1918 by Macbeth Galleries, N.Y.. It is a hardcover book with marbled paper wrapping. The endpage is inscribed "Xavier Martinez with the best wishes of his friend and pupil S.A. Atkins". Inside the cover there is writing in red, I presume by Martinez "Color is significant only when it becomes form" and other thoughts on tonalism. The book beautifully presents the works of Davies with titles and protective tissues. It measures 9 3/4" X 6 1/4" and is in excellent condition.
2. "a. Derain" by Elie Faure was published in 1923 by Les Editions Cres Et Cie in Paris. It is a softcover book with a hard cover wrapping. Inside the cover it is signed "Xavier Tizoc Martinez his book 1924-" with his red stamp. The title page is hand dated Paris October 1923 with a Derain print attached over the title. It is written in French and has Derain's works in black and white on every page. The book measures 11" X 8". There is a red stain on the lower corners of most pages.
I believe these are in good condition, especially considering their age and use. The art works are clean, bold and clear. The books both have wear on the edges. Davies has a tear on the lower spine and Derain has a bent corner. Please view my photographs for more description.
My friend is moving to a much smaller home and parting with some of his treasures.
I will be happy to answer any questions and, of course, combine your shipping when possible. The 2 books weigh 2 pounds 14.5 ounces.
