At the peak of his musical prowess, Stan Kenton persuaded Capitol Records to start a new sub-label, Kenton Presents Jazz, featuring musicians whom he personally selected and whose careers he wanted to promote. This set assembles the works of three musicians who became household names in the world of mid 20th-century jazz: Bob Cooper, Bill Holman, and Frank Rosolino. The ensembles that they assembled for these rare recordings were a who’s who of West Coast jazz. This set from Mosaic, #1706 in an edition limited to 5,000,includes more than 80 originals and adaptations on four CDs (never played; two of them still in their wrappers). After Capitol pulled the plug on the Kenton Presents series, two of these recordings were released as Capitol LPs under the musicians' own names: “Bill Holman’s Great Big Band” and Bob Cooper’s “Do Re Mi.” Well into the 21st century, Holman remains one of the most significant big-band composers, arrangers and leaders extant. The set is replete with the sort of comprehensive historical documentation and recording notes that we expect from Mosaic, as well as remarkable photographs from the likes of Ray Avery, William Claxton, and Roy Harte.
