Roberts R200 MW/LW Portable Radio, Green, 1960-1964

Description

Produced in Britain between 1960 and 1964 by Roberts Radio Co.Ltd. of East Molesey in Surrey, the legendary R200 is an extremely popular model among vintage radio collectors as a result of its excellent design and vintage fans because it looks exactly how a vintage radio ought to look.

Many people wanted one when it was new, but few were able to have one due to the high price: £14 in 1960, which is equal to £270 today and was nearly three-quarters of the average manual worker's salary back then. Needless to say, second-hand examples were snapped up fast and, due to the build quality, they're not hard to find today - very clean examples can be had for £45, with even pristine examples topping out at about £100.

This one is good and, thanks to our PAT testers who connected it up to a transformer to find out, is working: please do note though that sometimes, when vintage electrical gear is powered up for the first time after many years, it sometimes only works for a short while before something needs to be replaced - we're going to assume that if you're looking at 60-year-old radios on Ebay you probably already know this and how how to fix it if necessary.

Cosmetically, it's not in terrible condition: the leather effect coating has some scuffs and scrapes and is peeling on the base, but there are no rips or gouges to the exterior. The speaker grille is in decent shape and all three knobs are in place; so to is the Roberts badge, though it's lost some of its gold colouring. The "turntable" base, which allows the radio to be rotated without scratching your highly polished mid-century modern furntiyre, is in excellent condition.

For most of the production run, R200s had a five-digit serial number. This one has a six-digit number, 161424, suggesting it's a fairly late example; since the number is greater than 70001, it would have been fitted with the later design circuit board built around AF117/AF117/AF117/OC81D/OC81/OC81 transistors in place of the original OC44/OC45/OC45/OV78D/OC78/OC78 design.

Delivery

Returns

Change of Mind

If when you receive your order you are not completely satisfied, you may return the items to us within 30 days for a refund. Returns will be processed within three working days once the goods have been received by us.

Items must be returned to us in the same condition as they were received by you. This includes, but is not limited to: original packaging, original boxes, packaging materials, manuals, blank warranty cards, accessories and documents. We reserve the right to refuse a return or deduct an amount for lost value where the item is returned in a different condition.
