From 1926, the classic work, The Gangs of New York, by Herbert Asbury, the basis for the Martin Scorsese film of the same name. Published by Garden City Publishing, Garden City, New York. The second edition, in the same format with the same illustrations as the first edition. Bound in tan cloth, Personally, we think the book is much more interesting than the movie, partly because we are not fans of Leonardo di Caprio. The book has great material on such bizarre entities as The Whyo Gang, with colorful members Babook Connolly, Banjo Pete Emerson, Billy the Kid, Slops Connolly, Dorsey Doyle, Red Rocks Farrell, Googy Corcoran. Great mug shots also of Dopey Benny, Owney Madden, Kid Dropper and Little Augie. Also has great material on the Draft Riots, in which mostly Irish mobs burned down landmarks like the Colored Orphan's Home, trying to evade serving in the Civil War.
