Bhumisparsha Buddha, also known as "Calling the Earth to Witness",is a representation of the historical Shakyamuni Buddha in a hand gesture called bhumisparsha mudra.

The gesture symbolizes the moment when the Buddha achieved enlightenment under the bodhi tree, when he called upon the earth goddess, Sthavara, to bear witness to his purity and chastity, and to affirm that he was entitled to enlightenment after defeating Mara, the destroyer.
