This very early Ward Lock & Co illustrated travel guide is one of the original editions of the "red" guides published between 1910 and 1918. These were the first of those with the famous "coat of arms" design on the cover and with the 1/- net price at the top of the spine, leading to the guides becoming known as the "shilling" guides. A small number of the last editions from this period (dated 1917/18 and 1918/19) had the spine price updated to 1/6d net.
The guides are full of contemporary photographs, advertisements and fold-out maps.
These guides are increasingly becoming collectors' items. Please see the Ward Lock Red Guides website for more information about the series. I have a large collection of these early guides, but am needing to sell a number because of lack of space to store them.
This particular guide dates from 1918/19. This appears to a first edition of this title. Details as follows :
Area covered : Worcester, including Droitwich, Pershore, Evesham, Stratford-upon-Avon, Gloucester, Malvern, Cheltenham, Tewkesbury, Hereford and surrounding parts.
Contents : 156 pages of text plus a 70-page section of wonderful old contemporary advertisements. 60 illustrations. Some of the maps are missing.
Overall condition : Very good, but some wear.
Maps : The fold out Worcester city street map is present and in excellent condition. The other maps are missing.
Covers : Very good. Normal wear. Some fading to black design. Superficial crease to front over. No other markings or damage.
Spine : Very good. Normal wear. Faint superficial creasing. No markings or damage.
Binding : Very good. Slight crack inside front cover.
Pages : Very good. Very little wear. Faint discolouration at edges. One page is loose and a bit scuffed at the edges. No other markings or damage.
Other : Previous owner's signature on front pre-title page.
