Mid 19th century sampler by M.A.Andrew . Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1880 or slightly  earlier. Worked in wool on even weave gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the gauze are stitched with seven rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern with a diamond at the end of the second row, a flower at the end of the fourth, a cushion motif at the end of the penultimate row and a flower flanked by a dog at the end of the final row. M.A's name runs across the bottom edge of the gauze, then the whole piece is surrounded by a red and green chevron border pattern.
The gauze has minor overall discolouration with a light crease running across the middle. The colours of the wool are good with a small amount of stitch loss to the purple border under the second row of letters. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when M.A first stitched it.

Measures 10 1/4" x 12 1/2"

I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!
