Samuel Pepys (23 February 1633 - 26 May 1703) was an English naval administrator and Member of Parliament who is now most famous for his diary. Although Pepys had no maritime experience, he rose by patronage, hard work, and his talent for administration to be the Chief Secretary to the Admiralty under King James II. His influence and reforms at the Admiralty were important in the early professionalization of the Royal Navy. What detailed private diary did he keep during 1660?1669 was first published in the nineteenth century and is one of the most important primary sources for the English Restoration period. It combines personal revelation and eyewitness accounts of great events, such as the Great Plague of London, the Second Dutch War, and the Great Fire of London."

The Limited Editions Club of New York was started in 1929 by George Macy. At 29 years old, he was an avid reader who wanted to make his living from books. His business revolved around publishing beautifully illustrated classic titles in relatively small quantities, with club members paying a subscription.

Today, the Limited Editions Club (LEC) stands as a revered pillar in the rare book business, with its publications being highly sought after by collectors. Spanning from 1929 to 1985, the LEC's catalog boasts an impressive 548 titles, each a unique treasure in its own right.
