JOHN JAMES AUDUBON (1785-1851)
LITHOGRAPH ON PAPER, 6.5 inches X 10.25 inches (Sight)
Very Good to Excellent condition with great coloring and no defects other than a few very tiny
fox spots, the size of a pinhead. A great copy of this underrated print, one of the more successful of Audubon's
experiments with camera lucida, the birds and the pine cone having been reduced in size only slightly from
the original Havell version, resulting in an almost lifesize image. With a wide margin mat this print
would frame spectacularly.
This is an original hand-colored print - #82 - from the royal octavo first edition of John
James Audubon's Birds of America, published 1840-1844.
Lithographed, printed, and colored by J.T. Bowen, Philadelphia, 1840-44.
The first octavo edition was produced under the direct supervision of John
James Audubon and features strictly hand-coloring.
